In a courageous move, Gwen Walz is sharing her fertility journey after years of silence, aiming to emphasize the critical need for reproductive rights in America.
In her heartfelt account, Walz reflects on the emotional difficulty of recounting her experiences, acknowledging that many who face reproductive challenges share a common wish: to never have to speak about their struggles. “You would think you’d get used to it, but you don’t,” she admits. “However, the importance of this issue is too significant to ignore. Our fight for reproductive freedoms must continue, and I share my story in hopes of empowering others to reclaim their agency and shape their own futures.”
Earlier this year, while preparing for a press conference at the Minnesota State Capitol with her husband, Tim, Walz was struck by the news of a ruling from the Alabama Supreme Court declaring that embryos possess personhood. This decision had immediate implications, effectively halting IVF treatments across Alabama as medical facilities scrambled to understand the new legal landscape. The couple shared a moment of reflection, recalling their own challenging journey to start a family through fertility treatments.
Tim turned to Gwen and asked, “Do you feel like we can talk about this publicly?” Her response was resolute: “We absolutely do not have a choice.” Up until that point, even their closest friends were unaware of their struggles, but the ruling ignited a fire within them.
Since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Walz has grappled with feelings of frustration and anger, believing that the choice of when and how to start a family should be a personal decision, free from outside influence. The Alabama ruling served as a pivotal moment for her, compelling her to embrace the narrative of her past challenges. “We went through this difficult time for a purpose—to have our children—but there’s another purpose now,” she emphasized. With her platform as governor and first lady, and now in support of Kamala Harris’s campaign, Walz is determined to use her voice to share their story nationwide.
