A recent survey reveals a striking lack of awareness about polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common condition affecting one in ten women in the UK. The poll, which questioned 2,000 adults, found that 40% of participants were unaware of the disorder, which can lead to excessive hair growth and infertility among other symptoms.
PCOS is characterized by irregular ovulation, elevated levels of androgens (often referred to as ‘male’ hormones), and the presence of cysts on the ovaries. Despite its prevalence, many are unfamiliar with its symptoms. The survey uncovered that 70% of respondents did not recognize excessive hair growth, infertility (53%), or irregular menstrual cycles (46%) as signs of PCOS.
The findings also indicate that 72% of women with at least one symptom of PCOS, such as weight gain (24%), acne or oily skin (17%), and excess hair growth (10%), do not connect these issues to the condition. Consequently, 57% of those surveyed expressed a desire for greater awareness and understanding of PCOS to combat the stigma surrounding it.
Chloe Fallon, a beauty expert with Philips Lumea IPL hair removal devices, which sponsored the study in support of PCOS Awareness Month, emphasized the need for increased public knowledge. “This is a remarkably common condition that there’s not enough awareness of,” she said. “It affects millions of women globally but is seldom discussed openly, leaving many struggling with symptoms that impact their health and self-esteem.”
Among the surveyed women, 14% reported severe hair growth on areas such as the face, chest, or abdomen. Of these, a significant portion felt that it disrupted their daily lives, with 58% concerned about their appearance, 32% worried about judgment from colleagues, and 21% restricted in their clothing choices. Additionally, 29% admitted to avoiding social interactions and 16% had paused dating due to their symptoms.
Most women (95%) attempt to manage their hair growth with razors, tweezers, or hair removal creams, with nearly half feeling self-conscious. Philips Lumea IPL, known for its intense pulsed light technology, claims to offer long-term hair removal solutions and has partnered with influencer Zoe Antonia to share her experience with PCOS.
Antonia revealed, “My PCOS journey began at 17, with symptoms like unwanted facial hair, severe acne, and irregular periods. This condition made me feel incredibly self-conscious as a teenager.” She found solace and empowerment through sharing her story and images online, discovering that many women face similar struggles. “Alongside lifestyle and nutritional changes, using my IPL hair removal device has significantly reduced hair regrowth in areas like my lower belly, upper lip, and chin.”
Chloe Fallon reiterated the importance of open discussions about women’s health issues like PCOS, hoping that increased awareness will encourage more women to talk about their experiences without fear of judgment.
