Infertility, affecting one in six individuals globally as reported by the World Health Organization, is being addressed with increased efficacy at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) located at Fort Sam Houston. This military hospital is among only two U.S. military facilities offering comprehensive infertility treatments, focusing on maintaining affordability, convenience, and timely care.
Lt. Col. Samantha Simpson, the Division Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at BAMC, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to safety and successful outcomes. “One of the primary risks associated with in vitro fertilization (IVF) is multiple pregnancies, such as twins or triplets,” Simpson noted. “We prioritize safety by aiming for singleton pregnancies, and our favorable fertility results reflect this dedication.”
Patients have commended BAMC not only for its effective treatment outcomes but also for its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and convenience. Amanda Fischer, who previously underwent infertility treatments in North Carolina, shared her positive experience with BAMC. “In North Carolina, I had to travel extensively for appointments, but BAMC consolidates everything into a single location,” Fischer said.
Similarly, Isabel Paulk, a patient stationed at Fort Cavazos in Killeen, highlighted the advantages of BAMC’s centralized services. Despite the over-hour drive to Fort Sam Houston, Paulk found the integration of various services into one facility highly convenient. “Having access to the pharmacy and fertility clinic all in one place is incredibly beneficial,” Paulk remarked.
Cost remains a significant factor, with BAMC offering treatments at a substantially lower cost compared to civilian facilities due to its role in training OB-GYN residents. “Our training program necessitates exposure to IVF, which allows us to keep patient costs relatively low,” Simpson explained. Although most infertility treatments are covered by military insurance, some advanced procedures might still incur expenses exceeding $7,000. Paulk advises prospective patients to inquire about potential costs early in the treatment process.
BAMC’s services extend beyond San Antonio, drawing patients from across the country who benefit from the cost savings. “We have out-of-state patients who travel here specifically for IVF due to the financial advantages,” Simpson added.
With a small but dedicated team, including two doctors, two nurses, and an administrative assistant, BAMC successfully manages infertility treatments for approximately 120-150 patients annually. The center continually works on improving its services while maintaining high national standards for pregnancy and live birth rates.
