For many women, the journey to pregnancy can be an arduous and emotionally draining process. Beyond the realm of fertility specialists, fertility coaches also play a pivotal role in guiding women through these challenges. CBS 6’s Lara Bryn explores the story of a Saratoga Springs woman who, with the help of a dedicated fertility coach, managed to realize her dream of expanding her family despite significant personal hardship.
In December 2019, Megan Guarnier celebrated the birth of her first son. However, her joy was soon overshadowed when, just three months later, her husband Billy was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. “We had just started thinking about growing our family, and suddenly, we were faced with an unexpected challenge,” Guarnier, a resident of Saratoga Springs, recounted.
The diagnosis was terminal, prompting difficult decisions for the couple. Despite the gravity of their situation, Megan and Billy decided they wanted their son to have a sibling. They preserved Billy’s sperm and documented their decision. Tragically, Billy passed away in 2021. By the following year, Megan resolved to try for a second child using Billy’s sperm, determined to fulfill their shared dream.
Megan sought the assistance of Dr. Erica Bove, a fertility specialist and coach. Dr. Bove explained, “The field of fertility treatment is evolving, offering various options for individuals in different circumstances to build their families.” Dr. Bove’s approach involves a comprehensive evaluation, including initial intake, bloodwork, and assessment of the reproductive system and sperm. Although Megan had no difficulties conceiving her first child and was in excellent health as an Olympic cyclist, the path to pregnancy with Dr. Bove’s help proved more challenging this time around.
Dr. Bove emphasized the importance of both medical expertise and emotional support. “It’s crucial to not only address the medical aspects but also to provide emotional guidance so individuals can navigate the process without becoming overwhelmed,” she said.
Megan reflected on the emotional toll of her journey, noting, “Everything unfolded within a year for me, but many people endure this process for years, which is incredibly tough.”
Ultimately, Megan achieved her goal and welcomed another son in 2023, born on his father’s birthday. The two boys have formed a close bond, and Megan finds solace in knowing that Billy’s memory lives on through them. “Our family may not fit the traditional mold, but we have created a meaningful and loving family with the resources we had,” Megan shared.
Dr. Bove also offers practical advice for those struggling with fertility. She recommends consulting a doctor if trying to conceive for a year if under 35, or after six months if over 35. Additionally, she suggests adopting a healthy lifestyle by quitting smoking, losing excess weight, and considering coenzyme Q10 supplements to improve fertility.
