Merck Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, recently honored the winners of the Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards 2023 under the themes “More Than a Mother” and “Diabetes and Hypertension.” The awards ceremony, held via Videoconference, celebrated individuals from Tanzania and across Africa who have excelled in raising awareness on critical social and health issues.
Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and President of the “More Than a Mother” campaign, expressed her excitement in announcing the winners. “We have 83 winners from 22 African countries, supported by the First Ladies of Africa and Ambassadors of Merck Foundation More Than a Mother,” she stated, highlighting the broad impact of the awards.
The “More Than a Mother” Awards aimed to spotlight issues such as Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, and Women Empowerment, among others. Meanwhile, the “Diabetes and Hypertension” Awards focused on promoting healthy lifestyles and raising awareness about prevention and early detection in African countries.
Dr. Kelej emphasized the significance of the Media Awards in engaging communities and championing sensitive social and health causes. “Our winners are instrumental in advocating for change and giving a voice to the voiceless,” she added.
In addition to recognition, Merck Foundation is providing the winners with a one-year access to an online educational training program, ‘MasterClass’. This initiative aims to further empower and equip the winners in their endeavors to raise awareness and drive social impact.
Dr. Kelej also announced the Call for Applications for the Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards 2024, encouraging continued participation in partnership with African First Ladies. “Let’s continue to amplify our efforts in raising awareness on crucial social and health issues,” she concluded.
