Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski has joyfully welcomed her first child, a daughter named Georgie Winter, with her husband Todd Kapostasy, following a long and difficult five-year journey with infertility.
In an emotional interview with TODAY, Lipinski, 41, shared the heartwarming news. “I have really incredible news to share!” she exclaimed, revealing the arrival of their baby girl via surrogate. “Todd and I have a baby girl, Georgie Winter, that arrived into our arms by the most beautiful surrogate.”
Lipinski, who had been through years of struggle with infertility, was present in the delivery room when Georgie was born. Reflecting on the emotional moment, Lipinski described the overwhelming sense of relief. “My doctor had me playing my favorite song, and I’m bawling because I think there was just so much relief of, ‘Is this five-year journey over?’” she recalled. “And then immediately, the baby is out, screaming, and on my chest, and we’re doing skin-to-skin. It was one of those moments like, ‘How did my life just change so quickly, and is this a dream? Because it feels like it.’”
The figure skating champion and NBC Sports analyst has been open about her struggles with infertility, including multiple rounds of IVF, four miscarriages, and a diagnosis of endometriosis, a condition that makes conception challenging. Throughout their journey, Lipinski and Kapostasy have documented their experience on their podcast, Tara Lipinski: Unexpecting, offering support to others in similar situations.
Expressing gratitude for finally becoming a mother, Lipinski shared, “I feel so much gratitude — it just didn’t happen for so long — and we’re just very, very lucky that this happened for us.”
Despite her joy, Lipinski acknowledged the pain others still face on their infertility journey. “I deal with this feeling of, a little guilt for all the people still in that wait, still hearing this news and thinking what I thought for those five years of, ‘When is it going to be my time?’” she admitted.
Creating their podcast brought Lipinski and Todd even closer, and it introduced them to a community of others who understood their struggles. “Not only do I feel more bonded to Todd and we’ve had these conversations that I think we would have never had, but I also have now connected with this entire community, which is by far the most meaningful thing I’ve ever been able to be a part of,” Lipinski said.
Now that Georgie is here, Lipinski has a heartfelt message for her daughter: “I just want her to know that she was so wanted. That Todd and I thought about her for five years and that we can’t wait to hopefully be the best parents to her and give her a beautiful life.”
