In a move to make fertility treatments more accessible and affordable, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) has reintroduced the IVF Access and Affordability Act. This important piece of legislation aims to ease the financial burden faced by families who seek in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
The bill proposes a tax credit of up to $20,000 for individuals and $40,000 for couples filing jointly. This credit will help offset the often prohibitively high costs associated with IVF and related treatments.
Congressman Lawler commented, “Too many families in New York and across the country struggle with the financial burden of fertility treatments. IVF and other fertility services should never feel out of reach for those who dream of having children.”
The legislation is designed to help individuals and couples access fertility services without the financial barriers that many face. Lawler continued, “For those struggling with infertility, access to IVF can make all the difference. This legislation is about ensuring that every family who wants to have children has the opportunity to do so, without being priced out of care.”
Support from Advocacy Groups
The IVF Access and Affordability Act has received broad support from various advocacy groups, including Hadassah, an organization committed to advancing healthcare. Hadassah National President Carol Ann Schwartz expressed her support for the bill, emphasizing that “Too many families, including many Jewish families, face infertility in their journey toward parenthood. Hadassah supports a wide array of options that make infertility treatments more accessible, including the tax credits outlined in the IVF Access and Affordability Act and insurance coverage.” Schwartz also commended Congressman Lawler for his efforts in alleviating the financial burdens of infertility treatments for American families.
Lawler’s Bipartisan Approach
Congressman Lawler is known for his bipartisan approach to legislation and represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, which includes parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties, just north of New York City. His reintroduction of this bill is seen as part of his broader commitment to supporting families and addressing issues related to healthcare access and affordability.
This legislative effort highlights the growing recognition of infertility as not just a medical challenge, but a financial and emotional one as well, underscoring the importance of providing families with the resources they need to build their families.
