Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) unveiled a key piece of legislation for the 2025 legislative session aimed at protecting access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) for Georgians. Sponsored by Rep. Lehman Franklin (R-Statesboro), the bill seeks to enshrine protections for IVF in state law, ensuring that individuals struggling with infertility can continue to rely on this vital medical treatment.
“Infertility is a reality for millions of Americans, including many here in Georgia, who are trying to start or expand their families,” said Speaker Burns. “IVF has made parenthood a possibility for countless Georgians, and this legislation guarantees that this life-changing treatment will always be available to those who need it.”
Infertility affects nearly 19% of women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. IVF has emerged as a safe and effective option for many, and in 2021 alone, over 2,300 children were born through IVF in Georgia.
Rep. Franklin, the sponsor of the bill, shared a personal connection to the cause, stating, “I’m honored to introduce this legislation to preserve IVF access, which has given so many Georgia families—including my own—the gift of a child. My wife and I are thrilled to welcome our first daughter later this year, thanks to IVF. I want every family facing infertility to have the same chance at this incredible miracle.”
