Thiruvananthapuram: The Reproductive Medicine Department at SAT Hospital has become a lifeline for couples struggling with infertility, having helped bring approximately 500 babies into the world through state-of-the-art IVF treatments, according to Health Minister Veena George.
Minister George emphasized the government’s efforts to make the costly IVF procedures offered by private clinics accessible to a broader population. In pursuit of this goal, the government is enhancing infertility treatment facilities by establishing modern equipment and creating new job positions.
The department, which pioneered the state government’s IVF initiative in 2012, is the first of its kind in India. Over the years, it has expanded its offerings, with advanced medical technologies like hysteroscopy and incubators now available for patients.
The department boasts dedicated IVF and laparoscopy theatres, an IVF lab, and an andrology lab for specialized testing. Additionally, a cryopreservation system has been introduced to preserve eggs, sperm, and embryos for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation. A new fertility preservation program has been launched to allow cancer patients and others facing similar health challenges to store eggs for future use.
With services available six days a week, the department ensures that all treatments follow strict guidelines, including mandatory counseling. Minister George concluded by stressing that the continued strengthening of SAT Hospital’s Reproductive Medicine Department will help provide much-needed support to more families seeking to conceive.
