HOBOKEN, NJ – Assemblyman John Allen is championing legislation to expand New Jersey Medicaid and Plan First coverage to include fertility preservation services for individuals at risk of infertility due to medically necessary procedures.
The bill, A5000, successfully advanced through committee earlier this week and aims to address “iatrogenic infertility,” a condition where fertility is impaired as a result of medical treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. By mandating coverage, the bill ensures individuals undergoing such treatments have access to fertility preservation options, such as egg or sperm freezing.
“Every New Jersey resident deserves the chance to build a family, regardless of necessary medical treatments that may impact their fertility,” said Assemblyman Allen. “A5000 brings us a significant step closer to ensuring equitable access to fertility preservation services for those facing iatrogenic infertility. I am committed to working tirelessly to see this bill through to final passage and enactment.”
A companion bill, S3831, sponsored by Senators Joseph Vitale and Vin Gopal, is currently under review by the Senate Health, Human Services, and Senior Citizens Committee.
If enacted, the legislation would be a major step forward in promoting reproductive equity for New Jersey residents impacted by life-saving but fertility-compromising medical treatments.
