For many LGBTQ+ couples in Ireland, the path to parenthood can be filled with unique challenges. Lesley and Ger, a lesbian couple, recently shared their experience of becoming parents through IVF treatment at Thérapie Fertility Clinic, highlighting the emotional highs and lows of their journey.
“Becoming parents was something we had always dreamed of and talked about,” the couple shared. “But we had no idea how much was involved in the process until we sat down with Dr. John at Thérapie Fertility, discussed our options, and figured out the best chances of having our baby.”
Their journey began with an IVF plan using donor sperm. From that first meeting, they left the clinic with a clear path forward. Today, they are the proud parents of their “special little girl,” Billie.
Thérapie Fertility, a leading clinic in Ireland, has been at the forefront of reproductive healthcare for over three years, offering a wide range of services, including Reciprocal IVF, Egg Freezing, Sperm & Embryo Freezing, and Fertility Testing. With a focus on personalized, compassionate care, the clinic caters to the diverse needs of modern families, ensuring that each patient’s journey is respected and supported.
Lesley and Ger spoke highly of their experience at Thérapie Fertility, describing it as “warm” and “welcoming” from the moment they entered the clinic. “From the start, we felt safe and trusted with the staff there. They were so comforting and supportive every step of the way,” they said.
Their IVF treatment was successful on the first attempt, but that doesn’t mean the process was without challenges. “Fertility treatment comes with its own stresses and worries,” the couple admitted. “I questioned myself constantly—whether I was doing everything right, administering medications at the correct times, or if it would even work.”
Throughout this uncertainty, the couple found the staff at Thérapie Fertility to be incredibly accessible and responsive. “The communication was constant, and no question was too small. They always made us feel comfortable and at ease for every procedure, scan, and blood test,” they said.
Despite the emotional rollercoaster, the couple’s journey wasn’t without its setbacks. Originally, they had planned for a fresh embryo transfer following Ger’s egg retrieval. However, due to hormonal complications and ovarian hyperstimulation, the transfer was postponed. This was a difficult moment for the couple, as they had counted down the days to the procedure, only to face a setback.
“I remember feeling devastated and deflated,” Lesley recalled. “But the nurse, Jenny, was so reassuring. She explained everything to us and assured us that this delay was the best option for our chances of having a baby.”
Their patience paid off when they proceeded with a frozen embryo transfer the following month, which ultimately led to the pregnancy. Now, seven months later, they have their healthy baby girl, Billie.
“The trust you place in your fertility team is crucial,” they said. “You’re putting your hopes and dreams in someone else’s hands, and that trust is what got us through it all.”
Lesley and Ger also offered advice to other LGBTQ+ individuals and couples considering fertility treatments. “Be kind to yourself,” they advised. “It’s an emotional rollercoaster, but it’s a chapter of your life that will stay with you forever. The good days definitely outweigh the bad.”
Their final words of encouragement to those considering starting their own fertility journey: “If you’re thinking about it, do it. Even just going in for a consultation can open your eyes to a whole new level of excitement and hope, and it might be the first step towards the best days of your life.”
