As the 2024 elections conclude, newly elected lawmakers have an opportunity to advance meaningful policy that reflects the changes Americans desire. The election was highly divisive, but with a new Congress and administration, there are prospects for bipartisan cooperation. Former Republican members of Congress, who have long advocated for center-right policies, urge their peers to focus on the issues that resonate most with American families.
One such issue is the ability of all Americans to make decisions regarding family planning. As parents themselves, these former lawmakers understand the challenges of raising a family and believe that every individual should have the right to decide how and when to start a family, whether through natural conception, adoption, or assisted reproductive technologies like in-vitro fertilization (IVF). They stress that while family planning is deeply personal, the government can play a helpful role through a supportive tax code and expanded access to modern healthcare options—without interfering in private medical decisions.
This is not solely a women’s issue, but an issue of individual liberty. The right to self-determination in healthcare, including decisions on contraception and fertility treatment, is fundamental. The Constitution protects this right, and the success of American society depends on respecting the freedom to make these critical life decisions without government interference.
Polling data reflects broad, bipartisan support for expanding access to affordable contraceptives and IVF. A survey by the center-right nonprofit Centerline Liberties found that the majority of Americans, including Republicans, Democrats, and independents, favor protecting and expanding access to contraception. Seventy-five percent of men—63 percent of Republican men—believe it is beneficial for society that public funds increase access to contraceptives. Similarly, two-thirds of Americans support protecting access to IVF, with overwhelming support from both men and women across party lines.
Moreover, 73 percent of respondents agree that public funding for family planning services is good for society, including majorities of Republicans and independents. This issue is not just important to women, but to men and families across the country, particularly in swing states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
Republicans have long positioned themselves as the pro-family party, and supporting policies that give families the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions—especially regarding when and how to have children—is a natural extension of that platform. With overwhelming public support for access to contraception and IVF, Republicans are urged to prioritize this issue in the upcoming legislative agenda. By championing the fundamental rights of American families, lawmakers can secure a legacy of supporting individual freedoms and family well-being.
