Syracuse, NY – November 19, 2024 — In light of projections showing a significant decline in New York’s population over the next quarter-century, researchers point to low fertility rates as a key factor. Amid this challenge, some women like Angela Hatem have defied the odds, relying on science and persistence to fulfill their dreams of motherhood.
Hatem, a resident of Indiana, had always dreamed of becoming a mother, but the road to realizing that dream was far from smooth. Her story reflects the struggles of many women seeking fertility treatments, particularly those who face obstacles such as low ovarian reserve, a condition that affects their ability to conceive.
“I am a single mom by choice, and creating a family the traditional way was difficult,” Hatem explained. “It was just me and science against the world.”
After struggling to find an anonymous sperm donor and facing challenges with fertility treatments, Hatem learned about her low ovarian reserve. She embarked on multiple rounds of intrauterine insemination (IUI) without success. “I went through eight IUIs, and I was 38 at the time. By the eighth attempt, my fertility specialist said, ‘It’s time to get aggressive. IVF is the next step,’” she recalled.
However, the cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF) posed another obstacle. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine reports that the average cost for a single IVF cycle is around $12,000. Hatem, living in Indiana, looked for more affordable options, which led her to CNY Fertility in Syracuse, New York.
“I think CNY Fertility is at the top when it comes to affordable IVF. The cost was less than half — even a quarter — of what they were quoting me in Indianapolis,” Hatem shared.
At CNY Fertility, Dr. Robert Kiltz emphasized a holistic approach, incorporating lifestyle changes, nutrition, and acupuncture into the fertility process. Despite adopting these strategies, Hatem’s first two IVF attempts ended in failure. Desperate, she turned to a strict Keto Diet as her final attempt to improve her chances.
In a dramatic turn of events, Hatem received a life-changing call: “The nurse told me, ‘You have an HSG of 124, which means you’re pregnant.’ I collapsed to the ground in tears. I thanked everyone — CNY, my doctors, and God. It felt like winning a Grammy. I couldn’t thank enough people.”
Six years later, Hatem is now the proud mother of Wyatt, a boy who has brought more joy into her life than she ever imagined.
“Every step I took, every mile I drove, it was all worth it to bring him into my life,” Hatem reflected. “I’m grateful for every moment of this journey.”
