Dr. Oye Victor, a trado-medical practitioner and Chief Executive Officer of Anaxon Wellness, has raised alarms over the increasing use of contraceptive pills among Nigerian women, warning that over-reliance on these pills can lead to serious reproductive health issues, including prolactin imbalance and infertility.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, Dr. Victor emphasized the rising cases of prolactin imbalance, a condition that he says often goes unnoticed or is misdiagnosed. He highlighted that prolactin, a hormone present in both men and women, becomes problematic when its levels are abnormally high. While prolactin plays a crucial role in fertility, particularly in women, excessive levels can disrupt the hormonal system, leading to infertility and other health complications.
“Prolactin is essential for the regulation of female fertility. However, when it is elevated beyond normal levels, it can have a counterproductive effect, leading to infertility and other serious health risks,” Dr. Victor explained. He noted that many women unknowingly suffer from prolactin imbalance due to factors such as excessive contraceptive pill use, abortion, and miscarriage.
Dr. Victor urged women to consider safer alternatives, such as practicing safe sex, to minimize their risk of reproductive issues. He warned against the dangers of excessive pill consumption, which he said could lead to long-term hormonal disruptions, including prolactin imbalance.
The symptoms of prolactin imbalance, according to Dr. Victor, include unexplained nipple discharge, irregular or absent menstrual periods, menopausal symptoms, and infertility. He advised women not to ignore these signs and to seek medical consultation if they experience any of these symptoms. Prolactin imbalance can be diagnosed through a simple hormonal profile test, he added.
Dr. Victor clarified that prolactin imbalance is not an infection, as some might believe, but a hormonal condition that can be effectively managed with professional treatment. He recommended a balanced approach to treatment, which typically begins with restoring hormonal balance. Following this, herbal remedies may be prescribed to address hyperprolactinemia, provided the condition is confirmed through proper diagnosis.
“Effective treatment requires avoiding known triggers and risk factors, such as the consumption of carbonated foods and drinks,” Dr. Victor advised, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to managing prolactin imbalance and maintaining overall reproductive health.
In closing, Dr. Victor urged women to take proactive steps in safeguarding their reproductive health by avoiding excessive use of contraceptive pills and seeking medical guidance if they experience any symptoms of hormonal imbalance.
