On Thursday, October 24, vice presidential candidate JD Vance will engage with voters in a town hall hosted by NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo in the critical battleground state of Michigan. The event is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT), and viewers can find details on how to watch at JoinNN.com.
With reproductive rights at the forefront of the 2024 election, particularly following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, both Democrats and Republicans are articulating differing viewpoints on in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Senator JD Vance, a Republican from Ohio, has publicly voiced his support for fertility treatments. In an interview with NewsNation local affiliate WCMH earlier this year, he stated that he, along with former President Donald Trump and many Republicans, is in favor of IVF. In an August discussion with the New York Post, Vance attributed his stance on pro-family policies to his Catholic faith. He emphasized, “Catholicism asks you to think about those vulnerable people and what you can do to make their lives better and be helpful.”
IVF involves the retrieval of eggs from the ovaries, which are then fertilized by sperm in a laboratory setting. The resulting embryo is subsequently transferred to the uterus. However, the cost of these treatments can be prohibitively high, often reaching tens of thousands of dollars, which can leave some individuals in financial distress.
In September, Republicans blocked legislation aimed at establishing a nationwide right to in vitro fertilization for the second time this year. GOP lawmakers argued that the vote was merely an election-year maneuver orchestrated by Democrats. Vance, who was campaigning at the time of the vote, criticized the proposed legislation as a “showboat bill” lacking genuine prospects for passage. “The Senate blocked a ridiculous showboat bill that had no chance of passing,” he remarked during a campaign event in Wisconsin.
