Nicola Morgan, a dedicated birth and postnatal specialist, has launched an ebook titled Optimising Fertility After Loss: The Ultimate Guide, aimed at providing essential nutritional and lifestyle support for women striving to conceive following a miscarriage. This guide, released in conjunction with Pregnancy & Infant Loss Day on October 15, reflects Nicola’s long-standing commitment to women’s maternal health and well-being, especially during one of life’s most challenging periods.
As the founder of Doula of Belfast, Nicola has spent years advocating for women facing the challenges of motherhood and childbirth. Her latest ebook stems from her observations while supporting friends and clients through their grief after loss. She recognized a significant gap in resources focused on nutrition and fertility post-miscarriage.
“Walking through loss with a few friends and clients made me realize there was a need for practical nutritional guidance specifically aimed at those trying to conceive again,” Nicola explained. “With lengthy waiting times and intensive medical treatments, I wanted to create a resource where both parents could engage in meaningful actions to improve their fertility and overall health.”
The sobering reality is that one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage, often occurring before a woman even realizes she is pregnant. Nicola’s ebook, developed after completing her perinatal nutrition course, provides crucial information to help couples navigate their fertility journey following a loss.
The guide emphasizes the importance of addressing two critical factors that can impact fertility: oxidative stress and blood sugar control. Nicola emphasizes that “small, but effective lifestyle changes” can lead to significant improvements in fertility. For example, sperm quality can improve within 74 days, while an egg takes 100 days to mature.
“Making wholesome dietary changes can be the first step in optimizing your fertility,” she stated, underscoring the importance of nutrition in this sensitive phase.
Nicola’s path to becoming a doula is deeply personal. After experiencing three successful water births with a private midwife, she felt empowered and transformed. A request from her sister-in-law to be her birth partner planted the seed for her future career as a doula, but it wasn’t until 18 years later that she pursued this calling.
Having homeschooled her children until the end of their GCSEs, she initially felt it was too late to become a doula. However, a training opportunity in 2019 reignited her passion, and she completed a rigorous two-year online training program in just one year.
Today, Nicola’s expertise encompasses pregnancy, birth, holistic living, breastfeeding, trauma processing, biomechanics, and perinatal nutrition. Her dedication to supporting women throughout their pregnancy journeys shines through in her comprehensive approach.
Nicola addresses common misconceptions about doulas, clarifying that they are not just for home births or those seeking natural deliveries. Doulas provide support in various birth scenarios, including planned or unplanned cesarean sections. “We work together with partners to enhance the birth experience, fostering a deeper bond during this critical time,” she said.
Beyond the birthing process, Nicola also recognizes the challenges new parents face and offers invaluable postnatal support. “New parents need help to navigate the demands of parenting, and I provide assistance with household tasks, meal preparation, or simply being there to talk,” she explained.
At the heart of Nicola’s philosophy is the belief that education and empowerment are crucial for expectant mothers. “By educating both parents about birth, their autonomy, and their rights, we can cultivate confidence and self-trust, regardless of how the birth unfolds,” she stated.
Optimising Fertility After Loss serves as a testament to this philosophy, equipping women with actionable steps to regain control of their fertility health after experiencing loss. The guide covers essential topics such as supporting egg and sperm health, managing oxidative stress, balancing blood sugar, and ensuring a nutrient-rich diet. Additionally, it includes practical advice and recipes to facilitate these lifestyle changes.
“This resource is designed to help women and their partners take the first step in optimizing their fertility after loss, providing comfort and practical guidance,” Nicola concluded.
Optimising Fertility After Loss is available for free download on the Doula of Belfast website, making it accessible for those in need of support during this challenging journey.
