SACRAMENTO, Calif., Feb. 27, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sutter Health has received national accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for its first-ever obstetrics-gynecology (OB/Gyn) physician residency programs. These programs mark a significant expansion of the health system’s graduate medical education offerings and will help increase access to high-quality care for patients in Northern California, positioning Sutter Health as a leading institution for medical training, research, and patient care.
Sutter Health plans to expand its graduate medical education footprint, aiming to train and graduate 1,000 resident and fellow physicians annually by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to the future of healthcare and the development of physician leaders. The addition of OB/Gyn residency programs is part of this broader goal to enhance training opportunities in the region.

New OB/Gyn Residency Programs
The new OB/Gyn residency programs will be offered at two locations: Sutter Roseville Medical Center in Roseville, California, and Sutter’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in the East Bay area. These programs provide dynamic learning environments for aspiring OB/Gyn physicians, offering training in critical women’s health areas such as:
- Obstetrics care and labor/delivery
- Maternal-fetal medicine
- Minimally invasive and cancer surgery
- Urogynecology
- Family planning
- Reproductive endocrinology and infertility services
Residents will also gain experience in outpatient clinics, providing preventive care and holistic support for women’s health.
Expanding Access to Women’s Health Education
At both program sites, board-certified clinicians will guide residents through comprehensive training and mentorship to develop the skills necessary to address women’s health needs with confidence and compassion.
Isabelle Cohen, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and program director, emphasized that the residency program’s goal is to train residents to handle critical women’s health challenges, elevating care delivery with both expertise and empathy. “Our doctors and care teams will train these resident physicians to address critical women’s health needs and continually improve care with confidence and compassion,” Dr. Cohen said.
Mikio Nihira, M.D., an OB/Gyn specialist at Sutter Roseville Medical Center and program director, also highlighted that the program will provide residents with the necessary competencies to offer comprehensive and compassionate care to their patients. “We anticipate developing a program that instills confidence in our physician residents, enabling them to deliver the best care to women in need,” Dr. Nihira said.
Recruitment and Program Start
Recruitment for the OB/Gyn residency programs will begin in September 2025 through the National Residency Match Program, with seven residents expected to start in July 2026—three at Sutter Roseville and four at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center.
