For many couples, the dream of starting a family can be hindered by infertility, a challenge that affects one in six people worldwide. Obesity is a significant contributing factor, yet a recent survey by Orlando Health reveals that more than half of Americans are unaware of the connection between bariatric surgery and improved fertility.
“More patients are turning to bariatric surgery to address various medical issues, including infertility,” said Dr. Alexander Ramirez, Director of the Orlando Health Weight Loss & Bariatric Institute—Bayfront. “For women dealing with obesity and fertility struggles, there is often a direct link between their weight and their ability to conceive.”
The survey revealed a concerning lack of awareness, with 50% of respondents either unsure or neutral about the impact of obesity on fertility. Despite the well-known health risks of obesity—such as diabetes, hypertension, and increased cancer risk—its effects on fertility are less commonly understood. For women, obesity can disrupt menstrual cycles, lead to hormonal imbalances, and contribute to conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), all of which can hinder conception.
Dr. Ramirez explained, “PCOS is a hormonal disorder that affects many women of reproductive age, many of whom struggle with infertility for years. However, after bariatric surgery, many of these women experience a rapid improvement in fertility as their hormone levels stabilize and their menstrual cycles normalize.”
While other weight loss solutions, like GLP-1 medications, are available, the survey also revealed that 64% of Americans are unaware that stopping these medications could lead to weight regain. Dr. Ramirez stresses that bariatric surgery offers a more permanent, long-term solution by permanently altering the digestive system and enhancing hormone production, which can support ovulation and improve fertility.
“For women trying to conceive, timing is crucial. After bariatric surgery, we recommend waiting 18 to 24 months before attempting pregnancy,” advised Dr. Ramirez. “This waiting period allows the body to adjust and recover, ensuring optimal nutrient absorption and minimizing the risk of pregnancy complications such as hypertension, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes.”
Dr. Ramirez encourages individuals struggling with obesity to consider bariatric surgery as a viable option, particularly those who have found it difficult to achieve a healthy weight through diet and exercise alone. “Bariatric surgery is the most powerful tool we have to not only lose weight but maintain long-term weight loss, which can greatly improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy,” he said.
For those facing infertility due to obesity, bariatric surgery may offer a path to a healthier future and a higher chance of a successful pregnancy.
